Day of infamy

I was not alive on December 7, 1941, so I can only imagine how Americans who were must have felt that day. Considering that Hawaii was an American territory at the time, the bombing of this base by Japanese planes was a direct attack on the United States.

I do remember 9/11 all too well, and suppose it must have been pretty close to the way I felt then: horrified, frightened, and enraged. At least Pearl Harbor was a military target.

The Christmas of 1941 must have been awfully bleak, especially for those families whose loved ones were killed or missing.

Thought I'd share a few newspaper headlines regarding the attack on Pearl Harbor. The first headline was from a week previous to the bombing, and shows that the attack was not completely unexpected; it's still chilling to read, however.

Fold3, aka the Site Formerly Known As Footnote, has records relating to this event:

May we never forget the service and sacrifice of those who were there and who responded so heroically.
