New stuff in genealogy technology

Family Tree maker for Mac 2

Apple users had to wait forever for a Mac version of FTM, but thankfully the FTM 2 upgrade for Mac (which is the equivalent of Windows-based FTM 2012) is avaible to preorder on Ancestry.com. It will start shipping in late November.

One of the great things about the upgrade will be TreeSync, which connects your desktop's tree with the one you've uploaded on Ancestry.com. So when you update your desktop tree, your Ancestry.com tree will be updated automatically. No more having to change/add/delete info on both trees (what I have actually been doing just re-uploading my desktop's updated gedcom every month or so and deleting the old one).

The list price for the upgrade is $69.95, but you can currently get it for 30% off ($48.97) from Ancestry.com's store. Some members, like me, might get an email giving them access to an even better deal-- 40% off ($41.97), plus shipping, of course, which for me was $5.

If you require the whole FTM for Mac program and not just the upgrade, the price is $69.95.

Shoebox scanner phone app

1000 Memories is a newly discovered (by me) social networking genealogy site; here members can connect and share photos and stories of their families and ancestors.

They have just come out with a phone app called Shoebox. Using this, you can scan photos with your cell phone. My phone already has a camera, granted, but with Shoebox you can scan the picture and then immediately caption and date it and post it to your 1000 Memories page to share.

Both 1000 Memories registration and the Shoebox phone app are free.

Personally, I think this is a great way to get younger people, who were raised in the Wireless Age, interested in their family histories.

Question of the week: family tree software

What, in your opinion, is the best family tree/genealogy software available, and why?
